Mini-Goal #4: Nix the Sweets

Posted in Mini-Goals on February 23, 2011 by eeodim

So last night I walk in the door, say hello to the family, enter the kitchen and this is what greets me:

A nice little batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.  I’m actually pretty proud of myself as I could have taken down the whole container right then and there.  Knowing that I still had to workout though I thought better of it and decided that at the minimum I should wait until I had burned a few calories.  Needless to say I finished my workout and without a hint of hesitation ate two of ’em on my way to the shower.

Fast forward to this morning and my boy, Withrow, tells me he’s on a mini mission to bar himself from eating any chocolates or sweets for the next 10 days.  Never one to back away from a challenge and considering I haven’t established a “Mini-Goal” for quite some time I agreed to join his cause.  So … for the next 10 days I will not be able to take down any chocolates, desserts, candy, or sweets of any kind.  NOT an easy goal by any means seeing that I have a wife who’s a certified chocoholic.

I guess we’ll see where we are in 10 days time, but my guess is I’ll be able to adhere to the program.  God I hope those cookies are gone by the time I get home tonight!

Mini-Goal #3: Stretch at least 20 mins per day

Mini-Goal #2 Review: Could have been better, could have been worse.  I think there were two days where I didn’t get the full 64 oz.’s in, so that means I accomplished just over 70% of my goal.  Like I said, could have been better, could have been worse.  I did make the move of purchasing a water bottle that I can carry along with me pretty much where ever I go, so I won’t have any excuses going forward.

Mini-Goal #3: Stretch at least 20 mins a day.  I have incredibly tight hamstrings and to reduce injury going forward I need to make sure I’m more flexible.  Stretching for a minimum of 20 mins a day should prove beneficial.

Rule(s): complete within 7 days.  Attempt to do this in the morning before going to work.

Mini-Goal #2: Drink at least 64 oz of water per day

Mini-Goal #1 Review: I’m happy to report that I made it through Mini-Goal #1 .  I missed two days which had to be made up later in the week, but whatever.  I actually liked this goal for a few reasons, one of which is my youngest munchkin, Jossy, liked riding on my back while I did the push-ups.  I was actually able to kill two birds with one stone – get in some quality family time while knocking out some presses.

On to the next one …

Mini-Goal #2: Drink at least 64 oz. of water per day.  My current intake is probably 8-32 oz. (excluding coffee / tea).  Way too low for someone doing endurance training.  From what I gather, a normal person should be taking in at least 64 oz..  I’ll start at this “low” level now and work my way up.

Rule(s): complete within 7 days.  Try to drink 8 oz. in the morning after waking up and 8 oz. before bed.

Mini-Goal #1: 700 x 1400

A smoker can’t quit smoking in a day.  Someone who’s overweight can’t drop 50 lbs. by just snapping their fingers.  I too cannot become an Ironman just because I say I want to.  To become a Triathlete you really need to endorse the lifestyle.  To do so, I’ve decided to enforce weekly mini-goals upon myself which will 1) teach me to become more disciplined, 2) put me on the path to a healthier lifestyle and 3) build confidence once complete.  The mini-goals will be simple in nature, so that I will be able to complete pretty much on a daily basis even during hectic times.

Mini-Goal #1: complete a total of 700 push-ups and 1400 sit-ups (or ab exercises) within a seven day period.  That’s 100 push-ups and 200 sit-ups (ab exercises) per day.

Rule(s): complete the task within seven days.   If one day is missed then make up the remaining in the subsequent days.  That’s it.
